This coffee offering came about through James Hoffman's world-wide DECAF PROJECT and we were very happy to be one of 57 roasters worldwide that purchased these coffees to highlight the differences in the main decaffeination techniques. The same coffee from La Virgen, cultivated in the highlands of Guadalupe, Huila, Colombia, a region known for its rich coffee-growing heritage, is the coffee that was selected for this project.

Initially these were available for pre-order only to make sure all the coffees were roasted, packed and posted within a very short time window. That has now passed and we've made the sets available for general purchase and not specifically related to James's timelines for the world-wide tasting. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy and learn about the influences of these different techniques.

The dedicated coffee families of Guadalupe have cultivated their craft through generations, producing high-quality coffee with a deep commitment to environmental sustainability. With farms averaging 5 hectares, many of these growers have achieved Rainforest Certification and are fully compliant with EUDR standards, ensuring responsible farming practices that protect their environment and communities.

For the Decaf Project one special lot of La Virgen was split into four parts, three were decaffeinated by different methods, and one remains as unprocessed washed coffee. The four pack contains:

125g bag La Virgen (Non-Decaf): A pure, non-decaf washed coffee that captures the natural essence of Guadalupe’s terroir.

125g bag La Virgen – Swiss Water® Decaf: Decaffeinated using the Swiss Water® Process, a gentle, chemical-free method that preserves the coffee’s full flavors while removing caffeine.

125g bag La Virgen – Ethyl Acetate Decaf: Decaffeinated by Coffein Co., this process uses ethyl acetate to create a smooth and rich decaf experience.

125g bag La Virgen – Carbonic Natural Decaf: Decaffeinated using CR3-Kaffeeveredelung’s subcritical CO2 process, this cutting-edge method maintains the integrity and flavor of the original coffee.

We initially sold these in this four way selection pack as part of the Decaf Project and James will be releasing detailed videos of his visits to the decaffeination plants as well as performing a live cupping of these coffees via his YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@jameshoffmann).

We’ll also be putting these 4 coffees on the site for individual sale once after the worldwide cupping has taken place on December 15th.
